Fika Creative is one designer who believes the best work happens when you stop rushing it — and the best ideas rarely arrive at the desk.

I’m Jack Paterson — designer, builder and the entire team behind Fika Creative, an independent studio in Norwich. Every project here lands on my desk, which is exactly how I like it: no account managers, no hand‑offs, no games of creative telephone.

It started at school, designing YouTube thumbnails for gaming channels and graphics for streamers — a crash course in earning attention one pixel at a time. The paper trail kept up: an art scholarship, an A at GCSE, then 197/200 in A‑Level Graphic Design.

Thumbnails turned into little jobs for friends, friends turned into clients, and in 2019 the hobby quietly became the job. Seven years on: 27 shipped projects, 12 clients and a coffee count nobody’s brave enough to tally.

The work covers a lot of ground: brand and web for an engineering consultancy (Align Solutions), a ground‑up rebuild for a land contractor (Groundcore), print for a Norfolk estate agent (Pymm & Co.), e‑commerce for an eyewear brand, and identity, UI and motion for Forecourt, an iOS app for car lovers. Different industries, same standard: quietly memorable, never shouty.

The name isn’t decoration either. Fika — the Swedish ritual of stepping away for coffee and conversation — is how the work actually gets good. Step back, look again, come back sharper.

And these days? Full‑time, and fully portable. I work as I travel — the studio is wherever the laptop opens, which explains the photo. Loving what you do isn’t a service I can invoice for, but it shows up in every deliverable anyway.

(N°03 · How I Work) Three rules, no exceptions
/01

Pause before pixels

Every project starts with a slow, honest look at the problem — not a mood board. The thinking is the work; the artboard comes second.

/02

No mystery maths

Scoped and quoted up front, in plain English. You’ll never meet a surprise invoice, and retainers pause or cancel anytime. It’s the fika way.

/03

Small on purpose

You talk to the person doing the work, from first brief to launch day. Senior attention on every deliverable, because there’s no one to pass it to.

Kettle’s
on.
